Highlight your Career Progression. In addition to your Degree in Pharmacy, are there any certifications you have obtained, or are you currently pursuing any that you would like to mention?

I graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree from the University of Nairobi in 2018. I then worked as a locum pharmacist at the Yaya Chemists until November 2020. I am currently working at The Nairobi West Hospital since February 2021.

I also have a certification in antimicrobial stewardship.

What are you most passionate about in your Pharmacy practice?

Formulating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and implementing them, Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) within the hospital and formulating the antibiograms.

What do you love about being a Pharmacist?

A pharmacist plays a critical role during clinical ward rounds by providing crucial information about drugs to all healthcare workers. In addition, pharmacists convey knowledge and educate other healthcare workers on medication therapy management. Getting a complex case at work is challenging and exciting.

What has been your most challenging moment in the profession, and what valuable lessons did you learn from it?

Formulating SOPs. It is challenging because every organisation needs accreditation, and this depends on all efforts put into the SOPs and audits.

What keeps you going?

The constant reminder that I am making a difference and adding value to the field

In addition to being a Pharmacist, what else do you enjoy doing?

Travelling

What can you say to the young Pharmacist?

Focus on what lies ahead. Be optimistic about the future of pharmacists and make a difference when the opportunity arises.

Is there something else you’d like us to add to your feature?

Hospital pharmacy is exciting and challenging, so don’t hesitate to work the hours!
